How long should a resume be? One page vs. two

How long a resume should be at each career stage, when a second page is justified, what to cut to get back to one page, and the rules for CVs and federal jobs.

A resume should be one page if you are a student, a recent graduate or have fewer than ten years of experience, and no more than two pages after that. A second page is justified by ten or more years of relevant experience or an advanced degree, not by the wish to include everything.

The main exception is the academic CV, which lists research, teaching and publications in full and has no page limit. Federal job applications in the United States have had a two-page limit since September 2025.

Key takeaways

  • One page: students, recent graduates and anyone with fewer than ten years of experience.
  • Two pages: ten or more years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree. Two is the ceiling for a resume.
  • Never reach one page by shrinking the type below 10 points or the margins below half an inch. Cut content.
  • Cut by relevance: old jobs first, then repeated bullets, objectives, reference lines and lists of soft skills.
  • An academic CV is a different document and runs longer by design.

How long should a resume be for your experience level?

Your situationLengthWhy
Student or internship applicantOne full pageCoursework, projects, activities and part-time jobs are enough to fill it
Recent graduate or early careerOne pageThere is rarely more relevant material than a page holds
Fewer than ten years of experienceOne pageThe University of Virginia’s Darden School tells alumni under ten years to try to keep it to one
Ten or more years of experienceUp to two pagesMIT’s resume checklist allows two pages for extensive experience, which it defines as ten years or more
Advanced degree, applying outside academiaOne or two pagesThe same MIT checklist allows a second page for an advanced degree

Faculty or research positionA CV, as long as it needs to beA CV records a full scholarly history

These are ceilings, not targets. A two-page resume from someone with twelve years of experience is fine. A one-page resume from the same person is also fine if it covers what the posting asks for.

If only a few lines spill onto a second page, cut back to one. A second page should look deliberate.

02

Is a two-page resume OK?

Yes, when the experience on it is relevant to the job. A second page is not a problem in itself. A padded first page with the strongest material buried on the second is.

To make two pages work:

  1. Put the summary, your current role and your most relevant accomplishments on page one. Assume page two is read only if page one earns it.
  2. Keep each job on a single page. Purdue’s writing lab advises against splitting the details of one job across a page break.
  3. Put your name and “Page 2” on the top line of the second page, as Darden’s template does, in case the pages are printed and separated.
  4. If a posting, a career fair or a recruiter sets a one-page limit, follow it.

03

What should you cut to get a resume down to one page?

Work down this list and stop when the resume fits.

  1. Old or unrelated jobs. Shorten or drop roles from more than ten years ago. Darden’s guidance is three bullets or fewer, or one short description, for jobs held over ten years earlier. See how far back a resume should go.
  2. The objective and the reference line. “References available upon request” says nothing an employer does not assume.
  3. Repeated bullets. If three jobs each say you trained new staff, keep the strongest example.
  4. Duties anyone in the job would have. “Answered phones” and “attended meetings” tell the reader nothing about you.
  5. Soft-skill lists and basic software. “Team player, detail-oriented, Microsoft Word” can go.
  6. Early-career details. High school, coursework and GPA come off once you have a few years of work.
  7. Extra contact lines. One phone number, one email, city and state.
  8. Wordy bullets. Tighten any bullet that runs past two lines.

Tightening often saves more space than deleting. These bullets are invented examples.

BeforeAfter
Was responsible for managing the scheduling of all appointments for the clinic’s team of five physicians on a daily basisScheduled about 120 appointments a day for five physicians
Successfully collaborated with members of the sales and product teams in order to help create new onboarding materials for customersCo-wrote the customer onboarding guide with sales and product, cutting setup calls from three to one
Utilized Excel in order to create a variety of different reports for management on a weekly basisBuilt four weekly Excel reports for the leadership team
Assisted the store manager with various tasks related to opening and closing the storeOpened and closed a 12-person store four days a week, including cash reconciliation

The formula behind the “after” column is in resume bullet points.

Layout changes can save a few lines without hurting readability: put skills on one line separated by commas, keep dates on the same line as the employer, and put all your contact details on one line.

04

What should you not do to make a resume fit?

  • Do not shrink the type below 10 points or the margins below half an inch. Those are the lower limits on MIT’s checklist. Purdue’s writing lab is stricter on margins and puts it this way: if you need type smaller than 10 points or margins under an inch to fit one page, consider two pages.
  • Do not switch to a two-column template to squeeze more in. Columns can cause problems when software reads the file. Resume templates explains why.
  • Do not strip the results out of your bullets. Cut a whole weak bullet before you cut the number from a strong one.
  • Do not remove dates, employers or locations. Gaps in the basic facts raise more questions than a second page does.

05

When should a resume be longer than two pages?

An academic CV. A CV is a full record of scholarly work, and its length grows with a career. The University of North Carolina’s Writing Center says a CV for someone early in graduate school might be two or three pages, while a seasoned researcher’s may run into double digits. CV vs. resume explains which one to send.

An addendum. Darden’s guide allows one exception to its two-page rule: a separate page listing transactions or publications.

When the employer asks. Some applications request a complete work history or a full CV. Give them what they ask for.

Federal jobs are no longer an exception. The Office of Personnel Management says resumes for federal jobs must be no longer than two pages, and since September 27, 2025, job seekers have had to choose a resume of two pages or less to apply through USAJOBS. Its advice for getting there is the same as for any resume: prioritize the most relevant and recent experience, use concise, results-focused language and remove outdated or unrelated experience.

06

What if your resume is too short?

A resume that stops halfway down the page looks unfinished. Before you widen the margins, add evidence:

  • Class projects, capstones and research, written as entries with bullets.
  • Volunteer work, clubs, sports and part-time jobs, with what you did and at what scale.
  • A skills section with the tools and languages you can use today.
  • A result on every bullet that has one.

Resume with no experience shows a full page built this way. The section-by-section rules are in how to write a resume.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can a resume be two pages?

Yes. Two pages are appropriate when you have ten or more years of relevant experience or an advanced degree. Put your strongest material on the first page, keep each job together on one page and add your name to the second.

Is a one-page resume better than two?

Only when one page holds everything relevant. For students, recent graduates and people with fewer than ten years of experience, it usually does. Cutting a long career down to one page can remove the evidence a senior role requires, so experienced candidates should use the second page.

How long should a resume be for a student or recent graduate?

One full page. Use coursework, projects, internships, part-time jobs and activities to fill it, and keep the type at 10 points or larger. Purdue’s writing lab calls a one-page limit a good approach for new college graduates and high school students.

How long should a federal resume be?

Two pages at most. The US Office of Personnel Management’s guidance says resumes must be no longer than two pages, and since September 27, 2025, job seekers must choose a resume of two pages or less to apply through USAJOBS.

Can a resume be three pages?

Not as a standard resume. If you need more than two pages, you are probably writing an academic CV, attaching a separate list of publications or transactions, or answering an employer’s request for a complete history. Otherwise, cut older and less relevant material until it fits on two.
