Overview

The Cloud Engineer is responsible for the administration, reliability, security, and continuous improvement of Yale University’s cloud platforms and supporting services. This position helps ensure cloud environments provide the availability, performance, security, and operational capabilities required to support University workloads.

The Cloud Engineer works independently and collaboratively with infrastructure, security, application, research, and other technology teams to implement and support cloud solutions across public and hybrid cloud environments. The role develops and maintains automation and Infrastructure as Code (IaC), supports cloud networking and identity services, troubleshoots complex technical issues, and helps operationalize cloud technologies and services.

The position also provides technical consultation to researchers, faculty, staff, and IT partners to understand requirements and assist with the implementation of secure, reliable, and scalable cloud solutions. - Develop, maintain, and enhance Infrastructure as Code (IaC) used to provision and manage cloud infrastructure and services. - Develop automation to improve the consistency, reliability, and efficiency of cloud platform operations. - Administer cloud identity and access management (IAM), including integration with enterprise Single Sign-On (SSO), role-based access, and cloud organization policies. - Support hybrid networking between Yale campus infrastructure and public cloud environments, including routing, connectivity, firewalls, load balancing, DNS, and related network services. - Monitor andMo troubleshoot connectivity between campus and cloud environments. - Monitor the health, availability, and performance of cloud platforms and workloads using observability platforms such as Dynatrace, Datadog, and cloud-native monitoring services. - Integrate security controls and cloud security posture management capabilities into cloud platforms and solutions using tools such as Wiz and native cloud security services. - Assist with the implementation and enforcement of security, governance, and compliance controls across cloud environments. - Support cloud environments that host regulated, sensitive, or high-risk data and workloads, including environments subject to frameworks such as HIPAA and NIST 800-171. - Monitor cloud consumption and costs using cloud-native and third-party financial management tools and assist with identifying opportunities for optimization. - Provide technical consultation to researchers, faculty, staff, and IT teams to understand requirements and assist with the design and implementation of cloud solutions. - Diagnose and resolve cloud platform incidents and service requests, including monitoring and remediation of issues through ServiceNow. - Perform root-cause analysis for cloud infrastructure and platform issues and recommend corrective or preventative actions. - Create, maintain, and improve technical documentation, operational procedures, standards, and knowledge articles. - Evaluate new cloud technologies and services and assist with their integration, documentation, and transition into operational support. - Collaborate with team members to cross-train on technologies and improve the team’s collective operational capabilities. - Participate in an on-call rotation supporting cloud platforms and services.

The successful candidate will have experience in the following areas: - Strong understanding of cloud computing technologies, architecture concepts, and operational best practices. - Demonstrated experience administering and supporting public cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). - Strong knowledge of cloud infrastructure concepts, including compute, storage, networking, identity, security, firewalls, DNS, and load balancing. - Experience supporting hybrid environments integrating cloud and on-premises infrastructure. - Experience developing and maintaining Infrastructure as Code and automation using technologies such as Terraform, Ansible, Bash, Python, Go, and Git. - Experience with cloud identity and access management, including role-based access control, SSO integration, and privileged access. - Experience applying cloud governance policies and security controls across cloud accounts, subscriptions, or organizations. - Understanding of cloud security architecture, security monitoring, vulnerability management, and cloud security posture management. - Experience with monitoring, observability, and troubleshooting of distribute infrastructure and cloud services. - Ability to diagnose complex infrastructure and platform problems and independently drive issues toward resolution. - Familiarity with security and compliance requirements associated with regulated or sensitive data, including frameworks such as HIPAA or NIST 800-171. - Ability to translate technical and business requirements into practical cloud infrastructure solutions.

Required Skills and Abilities

1.Strong understanding of cloud computing technologies, architecture concepts, andoperational best practices.

2.Demonstrated experience administering and supporting public cloud platforms such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

3.Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.  Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.

4.Ability to collaborate effectively across teams and technical disciplines.  Ability to create clear technical documentation and operational procedures.

5.Ability and willingness to learn new technologies, cross-train team members, and operationalize new cloud services and capabilities.

Preferred Experience

1.Experience supporting cloud environments within higher education, research,healthcare, or similarly complex organizations.  Experience working directly with researchers or research computing environments.

2.Experience supporting workloads subject to regulatory or contractual security requirements.

3.Experience with cloud financial management, cost optimization, or FinOps

practices.

4.Experience with observability or cloud security platforms such as Dynatrace,

Datadog, or Wiz.

5.Experience supporting enterprise-scale Azure, AWS, or GCP environments.

Principal Responsibilities

1. Design, analyze, code, test, debug, document and maintain moderately complex enterprise systems; develop enhancements that enable a positive end-user experience. 2. Research, analyze, design, document, and modify software specifications throughout the production life cycle. 3. Create and implement project specifications/plans for projects with straightforward inter-dependency with other systems and/or projects. 4. Modify moderately complex application programs from detailed specifications. 5. Develop and validate test routines and schedules, evaluate code to ensure that it is valid, is properly structured, meets industry standards and is compatible with browsers, devices, or operating systems.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree and four years of experience or equivalent education and experience.

Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of information security concepts, principles, relevant tools, and standards.

Developed analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Developed interpersonal, written, communication, presentation, and organizational skills.

Familiarity with systems analysis methods and techniques.

Familiarity with project management skills.
