POSITION SUMMARY:
Marathon Petroleum Company is seeking a Process Control Manager at the Martinez Renewable Fuels Facility. This role is responsible for leading the Process Control team that supports safe, reliable, and efficient facility operations through process automation, control systems, and optimization. The Process Control Manager will oversee team performance, establish priorities, support the technical execution of process control initiatives, and foster employees’ ongoing professional development.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: - Plans, manages, and directs activities of a group of engineers and technicians that ensure the regulatory process control, advanced control optimization, and safety system automation needs of the refinery are met. - Provides technical leadership and directs technical resources during all modes of refinery operation including normal, upset and emergency, turnaround coverage/direction, and startup/shutdown activities. Provides technical guidance related to controller function and expert troubleshooting of controller, equipment, and system issues. Ensures adherence to process control policies/procedures and process control refining standard practices. Provides direct oversight and independent review of critical controller design and installation activities. Ensures all management of change, process safety, and regulatory compliance requirements are met. - Advises and directs engineers on monitoring the health and performance of regulatory controls, advanced process controls used for process optimization, and PLCs used for complex automation, equipment protection, and emergency shutdown systems. Collaborates with other departments and disciplines to develop repair/redesign options to address acute or chronic operating problems. Directs resources in the planning and execution phases of turnarounds, where responsibilities include controller loop checking, network and control systems upgrades, PLC program testing and modifications, and implementation of process control and automation projects. - Serves as the liaison between OT resources, Process Controls, and Operations to ensure risks of any planned updates, upgrades, or replacements are considered and mitigated so that OT work can be executed without impacting the safe, reliable operation of the running refinery. - Advises engineers as they collaborate with Operations, Commercial, and Process Engineering to design/build controllers to ensure stable and optimized refinery operation against known constraints. Advises and directs engineers in developing step tests to assess process response to manipulated variables, applying and adjusting tuning constants, and modifying controller configurations. - Directs engineers in making sound investment decisions with robust economic justification in support of their recommendations. Manages control systems replacements for obsolescence. Works with supply chain to manage system/PLC parts inventory. Manages local process control testing facility and directs testing of vendor control platform updates. - Communicates with leadership, peer supervisors, and other stakeholders to align on priorities and resource allocation. Prepares progress reports and decision support presentations for management to communicate accomplishments, justify recommendations, and elevate risks/concerns. - Participates in department-wide responsibilities (preparing/managing department budget; preparing/managing controls/PLC budgets; department staffing decisions, including recruiting, interviewing, and selection of candidates; university campus engagement; maintaining working relationships with third-party licensors, technology vendors, control systems suppliers, and engineering contractors).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: - Associate's Degree required. - Five (5) years or more relevant experience. - Valid Driver's License is required upon hire. - Must be able to obtain a TWIC Card.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: - Bachelors Degree Preferred - Experience in refining or petrochemical industry. - Previous supervisory experience.
