About Us
Active Power Investments LLC is a market participant in the North American wholesale power markets. We engage in virtual transactions (VTs), participate in Financial Transmission Rights (FTRs) / Congestion Revenue Rights (CRRs) auctions, and engage in related energy trading in electric power and natural gas futures and exchange-traded derivatives. We offer exposure to these unique investment opportunities, which provide an exceptional combination of returns and portfolio diversification.
As we scale, we're building out the finance function that will support the firm through its next phase of growth.
Our team develops and executes strategies across: - Independent System Operator (ISO) markets, such as CAISO, ERCOT, MISO, NYISO, PJM, and SPP. - Exchanges, such as ICE and CME, which offer related energy and commodities products.
Role Summary
We're looking for a Senior Financial Accountant to own the accounting and financial reporting function for a power trading business — with a particular focus on power-market settlements. You'll be the person who makes sure the numbers tie out: from the general ledger to the ISO settlement statement to the tax return. This is a hands-on role for someone who wants real ownership of the books at a growing trading firm, with a clear path to grow as the business grows.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Accounting - Lead the quarterly and annual financial close process for the company and its affiliated entities. - Prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, consolidations, and supporting financial schedules. - Maintain the integrity and accuracy of the general ledger and underlying accounting records within NetSuite. - Prepare variance analyses and investigate unusual or unexpected changes in revenue, expenses, assets, liabilities, and trading results. - Maintain accounting policies, close procedures, reporting templates, and other finance documentation.
Power-Market Settlements - Own the accounting, reconciliation, and maintenance of power-market settlement activity. - Review and reconcile settlement statements from ISOs/RTOs, exchanges, brokers, and other trading counterparties against trade records, internal reporting systems, bank activity, and the general ledger. - Identify, investigate, and resolve settlement discrepancies, missing transactions, and data-quality issues.
Tax Compliance - Coordinate the preparation and timely filing of the company's federal and state tax returns. - Maintain tax-compliance calendars and monitor filing and information-reporting deadlines. - Review tax returns and supporting calculations prepared by the external accountant for completeness and consistency with the company's accounting records.
Audit, Regulatory & External Reporting - Coordinate financial statement audits, reviews, and other engagements performed by external accountants. - Prepare audit schedules, account analyses, supporting documentation, and responses to auditor inquiries. - Ensure financial records and reporting packages are complete, accurate, and submitted within required deadlines. - Maintain organized documentation supporting financial statements, tax returns, settlements, and regulatory submissions.
Treasury & Other Finance Support - Assist with accounts payable, expense accounting, and the allocation of shared expenses among entities or trading books. - Review financial obligations and payment schedules arising from contracts and vendor agreements. - Support the preparation and allocation of expenses to trader books. - Provide backup support for other critical back-office activities as required.
Requirements
Required Qualifications - CPA designation, or equivalent recognized professional accounting designation, in good standing. - Minimum of three years of relevant professional accounting experience following completion of the CPA designation. - Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related discipline. - Public accounting (Big 4 or equivalent) articling background. - Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with financial and non-financial stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications - Experience in power trading, energy trading, commodities, financial markets, hedge funds, or another trading-related environment (power is ideal; other commodities, equities, or financial services are welcome). - Familiarity with ISO/RTO markets and power-market settlement statements. - Experience with NetSuite — implementation, configuration, saved searches, workflows, reporting, or system integrations. - Demonstrated interest in using automation and technology to improve accounting efficiency and reporting quality.
Benefits - This role is 100% remote, giving you the flexibility to be wherever you do your best work
