An Indeed application status is the label on each job in the Applied tab of My Jobs. Indeed’s help center groups the statuses by who sets them. Indeed sets four: Applied, Employer reviewing applications, Response seems unlikely and Job closed. The employer updates three: Application viewed, Employer reached out and Not selected by employer. You can set four yourself.
The statuses set by Indeed or by the employer are usually available only for jobs posted directly on Indeed, and Indeed says the ones it sets appear only in its mobile app.
Key takeaways
- Every status has an owner: Indeed, the employer or you.
- “Application viewed” means, in Indeed’s words, that the employer reviewed your application. It is not a reply.
- “Response seems unlikely” shows up in two cases: the employer has hired as many people as it needs, or your application has gone two weeks or more with no activity.
- “Not selected by employer” is a rejection. “Job closed” means the employer closed the job or it expired.
- If you applied on the company’s own site, Indeed does not track the application. Update the status yourself.
- When nothing moves, Indeed’s advice is to wait one to two weeks, send a message after two to three if the employer allows it, and move on after three to four.
01
Where do you find your application status on Indeed?
Open My Jobs and choose the Applied tab. My Jobs has four tabs: Saved, Applied, Interviews and Archived. Each job in the Applied tab carries a status, and the tab lists six months of applications at a time.
Indeed describes a status as showing what is happening with your application. Some statuses you update yourself. Others change based on what the employer does.
02
What does each Indeed application status mean?
| Status | Who sets it | What Indeed says it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Applied | Indeed | You submitted an application | Keep the confirmation email |
| Employer reviewing applications | Indeed | The employer is reviewing applications, but has not reviewed yours yet | Wait |
| Application viewed | The employer | The employer reviewed your application | Stay reachable. No message needed yet |
| Employer reached out | The employer | The employer contacted you through Indeed | Open Messages and reply the same day |
| Interviewing | You or the employer | You have an interview | Prepare, and keep the status current |
| Offer received | You or the employer | The employer offered you the job | Review the offer in writing |
| Hired | You or the employer | You accepted the job offer | Close out your other applications |
| Not selected by employer | The employer | The employer rejected your application | Archive it and move on |
| Response seems unlikely | Indeed | Indeed does not expect the employer to reply | Stop waiting on it |
| Job closed | Indeed | The employer closed the job, or the job expired | Archive it |
| No longer interested | You | You are no longer interested in this job | Nothing further |

03
What does “Application viewed” tell you?
Indeed’s definition is one sentence: the employer reviewed your application. It sits in the group of statuses that the employer updates.
That is all it establishes. It does not say what the employer thought, and it is not an invitation to follow up the same day.
The absence of the status proves little either. Asked whether you can check if an employer viewed your application, Indeed’s help center answers “Maybe”, and adds that employers can update application statuses for jobs they posted on Indeed. So a missing label is not proof that nobody looked.
04
What does “Response seems unlikely” mean?
It is Indeed’s forecast, not the employer’s decision. Indeed sets this status when it does not expect the employer to reply, in one of two situations:
- the employer has already hired enough candidates;
- there has been no activity on your application for at least two weeks.
A rejection by the employer has its own status, “Not selected by employer”. So “Response seems unlikely” is not a message that someone turned you down. It means either the employer has the hires it needs or your application has gone quiet. For planning purposes, treat it as closed and put your time into new applications.
05
Why is there no status, or one that never changes?
- You applied on the company’s site. Indeed lists two kinds of jobs. For jobs with an application on Indeed, you can track your status in My Jobs. For jobs that send you to the employer’s site, Indeed says it redirects you to the employer’s applicant tracking system and that you will not receive communication from Indeed about your application status. Those applications are not saved on Indeed, so you have to move the job to Applied, Interviews or Archived by hand.
- You are using the website. Indeed says the statuses it sets are available only in the mobile app.
- The employer has not updated anything. Three of the statuses depend on the employer’s actions.
- The application is not in this account. Indeed says an application can be missing from My Jobs if you did not apply directly on Indeed, if it is linked to a different Indeed account or email address, or if you applied more than six months ago.
The guide to applying for jobs on Indeed explains how to tell the two kinds of job apart before you apply.
06
How do you update or withdraw an application on Indeed?
- Open My Jobs and choose the Applied tab.
- Click or tap the three dots next to the application status.
- Choose Update status, then pick Interviewing, Offer received, Hired or No longer interested. The new status appears above the job title.
- To stop being considered, choose Withdraw application from the same menu.
Indeed attaches several warnings to withdrawing. You can only withdraw an application you made directly on Indeed. You may not be able to apply again. The employer may still contact you. And a withdrawn application cannot be reopened: if you withdrew by mistake, Indeed says to message the employer.
07
What should you do when the status stops moving?
Indeed’s help center gives its own sequence for an employer that does not respond:
- After one to two weeks: give the employer time to review. The one task Indeed suggests is checking your spam or junk folder.
- After two to three weeks: if the employer accepts follow-ups, send one brief, courteous message that repeats your interest in the role.
- After three to four weeks: with still no reply, Indeed’s view is that it is fine to move on and keep applying elsewhere.
Whether you can message at all depends on the employer. Indeed says the option exists only if the employer turns it on. When it is available, you are told by a “Send a message” option under the listing in My Jobs, by an email from Indeed, or by a notification in your account, after a delay of at least a few days. Your message is shared with your application and saved in Messages.
Hi [Name or hiring team], I applied for the [job title] role on [date] and wanted to restate my interest. I have [number] years of [relevant experience], including [one result that matches the posting]. Could you tell me whether applications are still being reviewed? I'm available to talk any day this week. Thank you, [Your name] [Phone]

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What does “Application viewed” mean on Indeed?
Indeed defines it as “The employer reviewed your application.” It is one of three statuses updated by the employer, along with “Employer reached out” and “Not selected by employer”. It confirms a review took place. It does not tell you the outcome or guarantee a reply.
Does “Response seems unlikely” mean I was rejected?
No. Indeed sets that status itself, either because the employer has hired as many people as it needs or because your application has gone two weeks or more with no activity. A rejection by the employer shows as “Not selected by employer”. Treat “Response seems unlikely” as a signal to stop waiting.
What does “Not selected by employer” mean on Indeed?
Indeed’s definition is that the employer rejected your application. The status is updated by the employer, not by Indeed. Archive the application and keep going. If a person wrote to you, the guide to replying to a job rejection covers what to send.
Why does my Indeed application not show a status?
Check first whether you applied on the employer’s own website. Indeed says it does not send status communication for those jobs and that such applications are not saved on Indeed. Statuses set by Indeed are also available only in the mobile app, and applications older than six months drop out of My Jobs.
Can you withdraw an application on Indeed?
Yes, if you applied directly on Indeed. Use the three dots next to the application status and choose Withdraw application. Indeed warns that you may not be able to apply again, that the employer may still contact you, and that a withdrawn application cannot be reopened.
